The Komen Race For The Cure ® Series Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. Each Komen Race for the Cure® is one of over 100 events held yearly in cities throughout the United States and Europe. Susan G. Komen for the Cure has laid the ground work for some of today’s most promising breast cancer treatment. The Komen Promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizig science to find the cures. Breast Cancer Facts & Figures Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59. It is the leading cancer site among American women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths. In 2007, 180,510 men and women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,910 men and women will die of breast cancer. The most proven and significant risk factors are being female and getting older. The majority of women with breast cancer have no known significant family history or other known risk factors. Only 5-10% of breast cancers are due to heredity. If detected early, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of over 95%. Breast Care Help Line & Web site Susan G. Special Events Kids for the Cure® Children (ages 6 -12) will receive a Kids for the Cure® shirt and a finisher ribbon. Local children entered their t-shirt designs and a winner was chosen. This artwork will be on the shirt. If you would like to participate as a family, the one mile walk (not timed), which starts at 10:10 a.m., is perfect for the whole family. A Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivors Breast cancer survivors who wish to be recognized may pick up their complimentary pink cap and pink t-shirt provided by Zeta Tau Alpha and RE/MAX. We would also like to invite participants to recognize those special people who have been touched by breast cancer. “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back signs will be available for all Race participants. The Breast Cancer Recognition Program is sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha and RE/Max. Volunteer Recognition Program New and returning volunteers are encouraged to get involved. Race volunteers will receive a t-shirt courtesy of SunChips in appreciation of their efforts. SunChips is the National Series Sponsor of the Volunteer Recognition Program.
